BOB ROSS Oil Painting
A technique known as BOB ROSS Oil Painting Technique is applied on canvas to improve the quality of the images. Following is the list of instructions about the use and care of the materials required in this technique.
Blending:
It means to soften the hard edges and most visible brush strokes by blending the wet oil paint on the canvas with a clean, dry brush. In this technique, brushing is done very lightly of an already painted area by using criss-cross method or simply by taping with the corner of the brush. It gives a natural appearance to the painting.
Marbling:
To give a marbled effect to the painting, you should place the different colors to be used on the mixing area of the palette. Using palette knife, pick up and fold the paints together and then, pull flat. Streaks of each color should be visible in the mixture. Note that colors should not be over-mixed.
Thinning Paints for Adding Highlights:
If thicker paints are present already on the canvas and you have to apply a mixing of paints over it, especially while highlighting the colors; make the paint to be applied as thin as possible using liquid white, liquid clear or odorless thinner. Note that thin paint will stick to thick paint.
Placement of Oil Colors on the Palette:
Generally, every artists uses 16″x20″ sized palette. Arrange the colors from light to dark around the outer edge of the palette and leave the place at the center for mixing the required colors.
Loading Your Brush:
In order to fully load the inside bristles of your brush first, hold it perpendicular to the palette and dip the bristles in the paint. Then, hold your brush at a 45 degree angle, drag your brush across your palette and away from the pile of paint. Flip your brush from side to side in a proper way so that both the sides are evenly loaded. When the bristles come to a chiseled or sharp flat edge, the brush is loaded correctly.
Loading the Palette Knife:
Using a palette knife, you should first of all pull the mixture of paint in a thin layer down across the palette. Now, hold your knife in a straight upward position and pull the long working edge of your knife diagonally across the paint. This will help in creating a roll of paint on your knife.
Paints to be used:
When applying the BOB ROSS painting technique on a canvas, a special firm oil paint is used for base colors. Colors used for highlighting should be much thinner for easy application. A variety of different equipments are used for this purpose. Liquid Clear is particularly exciting ingredient for wet-on-wet painting and it has an advantage of not diluting the intensity of other colors especially the darks. You should apply the liquid color very sparingly. People have a tendency to apply large amount of this color than how much is needed as it is so difficult to see.
Here, are few of the liquid colors that are frequently used- Alizarin Crimson, Sap Green, Bright Red, Dark Sienna, Pthalo Green, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium White, Pthalo Blue, Indian Yellow, Van Dyke, Brown, Midnight Black, Yellow Ochre .
Mixing of colors:
Mixing of colors is just like fun. You should always keep trying new colors by making a combination of two or more colors. You should be familiar with the basic colors. Within a very short time you will be so comfortable mixing colors that you will look forward to each painting as a new challenge.
Proper Selection of Products:
Probably, while using this technique most of the people face problems due to the wrong selection of the product to be used for painting. People sometimes use house painting brushes, thin soupy paints, etc. for this kind of artwork which is not at all suited for this type of paintings. All of the paintings for this technique should be created using Bob Ross paints, brushes and palette knives. To achieve the best results, You should only use the products designed specifically for use with the Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique.
Time Required for a Painting to Dry:
The time required for drying of a painting varies greatly based on a number of factors such as heat, humidity, thickness of paint, painting surface, brand of paint used, mediums used with the paint, etc. The drying time also depends on the colors used as different colors have different drying times such as blue color dry very fast while yellow and red colors dry very slowly.
Varnishing Your Paintings:
Varnishing will keep the colors vibrant and bright. It will protect the painting from harmful elements. You should use a good quality of non-yellowing varnish spray.
