What exactly is health and wellbeing?

Health and wellbeing encompasses both “healthy body” and “healthy mind”. Our health and wellbeing is often linked in with happiness. This can include if we are generally healthy and fit (both physically and mentally), are happy with our lives and where they are heading. Everyone wants to feel good about themselves and their lives.

Ways to improve our general health and wellbeing is something that is constantly being explored and has been the subject of many studies by both scientists and philosophers.

Although there are always aspects of our lives that we are not happy with and cannot change, there are things that we can change to improve our health and general wellbeing.

Improving your health doesn’t mean that you have to go on a radical diet and start up a gruelling fitness regime. If you are regularly active already then keep up the good work! If not, it’s never too late to start. Even seemingly small changes can have a dramatic impact.

Simple changes such as going out for walks, riding your bike or even playing on a trampoline can make you feel more energetic and generally healthy. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Join a dance class. It seems simple but fresh air really does do you a world of good. Instead of sitting inside on a nice day, get yourself out side! Any changes you make to your usual routine that make you more active will improve your health and allow you to get a better quality of sleep.

As well as making sure you keep active, it’s also important to make time to relax. Whether it’s a taking a long bath, getting your yoga mat out, meditation or curling up on the sofa with a book, always fit in time to relax, especially if you’ve had a stressful day. Allowing yourself time to unwind helps you de-stress, decrease your blood pressure, and re-energize yourself.

Food and drink can be a major factor when looking at how healthy you are and feel. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables is essential to keep your body healthy and boost your energy levels. Fresh fruits and veggies will help you feel fuller quicker and for longer, increase your energy and can help weight loss or weight management. This doesn’t mean that you have to totally steer clear of comfort foods, just have them in moderation.

Drinking plenty of water is paramount. Your body is made up mainly of water and your body needs lots of it in order to work as it should. Drinking water instead of sugary sodas or fruit juices will hydrate your body, make you feel fuller and reduce cravings and headaches.

Our wellbeing is usually used in a much broader sense. It covers our home and work life, social life, our environment and our psychological state. All these factors can have an effect on our wellbeing. Unhappiness in one of these areas can affect our wellbeing and even our health. For example, stress caused by work can manifest itself physically, causing headaches, aching, tiredness, lack of sleep etc.

When you are wanting to improve your general wellbeing, look at areas of your life that you could improve.

Are you fulfilled in your home life, work life and social life? What would you want to improve on?

Are there any personal relationships that are affecting your happiness? Do you want to broaden your social circle?

Do you want to take up a new hobby and spend more time doing something just for you?

Asking yourself these kinds of questions can help identify any areas that you are unhappy with and would like to improve. Once you know what you want, you can work on getting it.

Your health and wellbeing are extremely important. By making sure that you are looking after both your body and your mind, you will feel more fulfilled and happier in general!
